Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dental procedure that lightens teeth and removes stains and discoloration.

Types of teeth whitening:

  • In-office whitening: Done in a dentist's office, using high-concentration bleaching agents.
  • At-home whitening: Using custom-fitted trays and bleaching agents at home.
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) products: Whitening strips, toothpaste, and mouthwash available at stores.

How it works:

  • Bleaching agents: Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide penetrate tooth enamel and break down stains.
  • Oxidation: Stains are oxidized and removed, leaving teeth whiter.

Results:

  • Dramatic whitening: Up to 2-3 shades whiter in a single session.
  • Long-lasting: Results can last months to years, depending on maintenance.

Safety:

  • Safe: When done under dentist supervision.
  • Gum protection: Essential to avoid irritation.
  • Tooth sensitivity: Temporary and manageable.

Teeth whitening procedure is safe, however, not suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive teeth, gum disease, or worn enamel. Consult today for a safe teeth whitening procedure.

Treatment protocol will follow the below steps:

1. Pre-whitening exam:

  • Dental exam to ensure teeth and gums are healthy enough for whitening.

2. Teeth cleaning:

  • Professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar.

3. Impressions:

  • Mold impressions of teeth for custom whitening trays (if needed).

4. Whitening agent selection:

  • Choose appropriate whitening agent (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide).

5. In-office whitening:

  •  Apply whitening agent to teeth.
  •  Use activation light (if required).
  •  Wait for specified time (usually 30 minutes to 1 hour).
  •  Rinse and repeat (if necessary).

6. At-home whitening:

  •  Wear custom trays with whitening agent for specified time (usually 2-4 hours or overnight).
  •  Repeat daily for specified number of days.

7. Post-whitening care:

  • Avoid stain-causing foods/drinks: Coffee, tea, wine, berries, and spicy foods for 24-48 hours.
  • Use a straw: When drinking dark-colored beverages to minimize contact with teeth.
  • Rinse with water: After meals and snacks to remove loose food particles.
  • Brush and floss regularly: Maintain good oral hygiene habits.
  • Use a desensitizing toothpaste: If you experience tooth sensitivity.
  • Avoid tobacco and nicotine products: Which can stain teeth and reduce whitening effectiveness.
  • Attend follow-up appointments: To monitor results and adjust treatment as needed.
  • Wear a mouthguard: If you grind your teeth at night to prevent wear and tear.
  • Avoid using abrasive products: Like bleach or harsh mouthwashes, which can damage tooth enamel.
  • Maintain regular dental check-ups: To ensure oral health and optimize whitening results.
