Dental Implants

A dental implant is a metal post, usually made of titanium, that is surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth root. Types of dental implants include:

  • Single dental implant: ideal for replacing one tooth
  • Implant-supported bridges: ideal for people with several missing teeth
  • All-on-4 implants: recommended when a patient is looking for a secure solution for many missing teeth
  • 3-on-6 implant: an alternative to an implant-retained denture, consists of three individual dental bridges attached to six dental implants

Dental implant surgery can offer a welcome alternative to dentures or bridgework that doesn't fit well and can offer an option when a lack of natural teeth roots don't allow building denture or bridgework tooth replacements.

The treatment procedure of dental implants involves the following steps:

  1. Evaluation: The teeth, gums and jawbone are evaluated to determine if the jawbone is healthy and strong enough to support the dental implant.
  2. Placing the implant: Holes are drilled into the jawbone and the dental implant post is inserted. The gum is then closed over the implant.
  3. Osseointegration: The jawbone is allowed to heal and grow around the dental implant, which can take anywhere from 2 to 6 months.
  4. Abutment placement: A metal extender is added to the implant to connect the replacement tooth to the implant.
  5. Placing the tooth: An impression of the mouth and remaining teeth are made and used to create the replacement tooth, which is then attached to the abutment.
  6. Follow-up: The dentist checks the implant for any complications and ensures that the replacement tooth fits comfortably.

The following are ideal candidates for dental implants ¹:

  • Have good general and oral health
  • Have a fully grown jawbone
  • Have enough bone in your jaw to hold the implant or are able to have a bone graft
  • Have healthy gum tissue with no periodontal disease
  • Don't have a health condition that affects your body's ability to heal bone
  • Don't smoke
  • Are willing to commit several months to the process

On the other hand, you’ll need to consult a dentist first if the following problems exist. Dental implants may or may not be right for you if, (depends on treatment planning and other considerations):

  • You are younger than 18
  • You smoke or use other tobacco products
  • You have a lot of bone loss in your jaw
  • You have poor oral hygiene
  • You have a lot of cavities
  • You have gum disease
  • You have some medical conditions, such as bone disorders or some autoimmune conditions (such as diabetes)

General post-operative guidelines:

  1. Pain management: Follow the pain medication instructions as directed.
  2. Swelling and bruising: Apply ice packs to the affected area to reduce swelling.
  3. Diet: Stick to a soft food diet for the first few days, avoiding hot or spicy foods.
  4. Oral hygiene: Avoid brushing the implant site for the first few days. Resume gentle brushing and flossing after 24-48 hours.
  5. Follow-up appointments: Schedule follow-up appointments as directed by your dentist or oral surgeon.
  6. Rest: Avoid strenuous activities for the first 24-48 hours.
  7. Smoking: Avoid smoking for at least 24-48 hours, as it can delay healing.
  8. Antibiotics: Take antibiotics as directed, if prescribed.
  9. Monitor bleeding: Some bleeding is normal, but excessive bleeding should be reported to your dentist or oral surgeon.
  10. Follow specific instructions: Your dentist or oral surgeon may have additional specific instructions based on your individual needs.

Always follow instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and success of your dental implant.
